!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Known Problems:
1) The engine rpm will drop at idle down to ~500rpm and rev back up to 1000 or so consistently (about once per second)
2) It needs transmission mounts badly- perhaps engine mounts too (causes lurching and inconsistent 2nd gear engagement when cold)
3) It has new brakepads but it needs new brake wear sensors
4) Ignition switch cylinder occasionally difficult to turn (hard to turn key)
5) Multiple tears in passenger seat
6) Massive tear in driver’s seat and missing material
7) Crack in windshield
8) Areas of missing paint on body
9) Wiper cleaning fluid reservoir leaks
10) Check engine light on (from the revving, I think)

Maybe i’m being harsh, but that’s a $1,000 car to me at best.

A couple of months ago I saw one here on Oppo which looked worse, mismatched panels and such, and I don’t think that one ran. Not that that makes this one any better.

That isn’t even worthy of being a track car project.

I’ve seen plenty of Boxsters in similar shape or worse. 5+ years ago they hit that impulse buy price for middle-class non-enthusiasts just looking for a convertible with a prestigious badge. Most on on their 3rd+ owner and no one beyond the first really took care of them. Oddly, the IMS replacement here hints that the seller actually knows something about these cars. Given the miles I suspect it was a fun DD driven by a busy professional who just didn’t have the time to care for it.

You could buy a good NA Miata for less, and not have to throw thousands more at it to make it decent.

Ah yes, the dot com-era signing bonus car. God that was a weird time to be alive.

Yeah, the IMS fix makes it pretty interesting. It’s kind of like a free 1500 on top of the car which is the only thing that makes it interesting.

I feel for the guy, he bought the car planning to fix it up (probably read one to many posts from Tavarish). He probably thought all the fixes would be the most simple - idle is probably a sensor/air filter/cracked plastic tubing, etc..., lock cylinder just needs some lube, but I never got around to it (I would actually guess a piece of nylon inside is breaking loose and spalling so that it binds every so often.)
The solution is probably to find another one with the opposite issues and buy them both then smash them together into one working car.
